Choose from a variety of my live, virtual Outschool classes that focus on ocean education and connecting youth to nature.
Join Me On Outschool
Not everyone has the opportunity to visit the ocean, so I'd like to bring the ocean to my students; through live online classes, virtual dive trips and storytelling.
Throughout my courses, I'll share my experiences working as a diver at an aquarium, a whale watch tour guide, a STEM outreach coordinator, a freelance naturalist, a dive professional, and an ocean-entrepreneur.
I strive to make my courses both educational and engaging while fostering a community for your aspiring young naturalist to grow and learn.
Why Should We Care About the Ocean?
In this one-time class, students will learn about the importance of the ocean, our human relationship to the ocean, and how we can make small changes in our everyday lives to live for a better ocean.
Ages 10-14
Budding Biologists: Ages 5-9
Budding Biologists: All About Animal Adaptations
In this one-time class, students will learn more about animal adaptations and will take part in a fun and interactive game of hide and seek with their camouflaged fish.
The first half of the class will be structured as a lecture and engaging classroom discussion. The rest of the class will be more hands-on - students will colour in their fish stencil so that it hides in plain sight using camouflage. Each student will have the chance to showcase their creation and use of camouflage.
Ages 5-9
Adventures in Scuba Diving: Exploring Marine Ecosystems
I will be taking students on a journey into the blue in a fun and meaningful way while exploring different marine ecosystems, learning about biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) factors, discussing the importance of healthy biodiversity, and conservation efforts to protect and restore the ocean.
In this ongoing course, over the span of 7-weeks we will explore Coral Reefs, Open Ocean, Deep Seas, Frozen Seas, Kelp Forests, Intertidal Zone, and Estuaries.
Ages 8-13
This Week in Ocean News
Every week we will look at a different scientific article or current event about the ocean.
When budding young scientists follow current events and news stories related to the ocean, they are more likely to feel personally connected to the science they are learning. Analyzing and discussing real-world science news is also a way for students to learn about the scientific method and how new data may support or challenge old ideas.
This ongoing class is great for students who are passionate about the ocean, are interested in a career in ocean science, and/or have the desire to stay educated and up to date as to what’s happening in the ocean.
